How To Clean A Dryer Centrifugal Switch

When you press the start button on your tumble dryer and hear a humming noise coming from the engine area, it's still not time to panic. Yes, it could be a faulty motor, but it is possible that the centrifugal switch of the motor is hung.

A centrifugal dryer switch uses centrifugal force to open and close contacts in most dryer motors. When a dryer motor accelerates, the weights on the dryer motor slide out, taking pressure off the plunger on the centrifugal switch.

This allows the switch to open the contacts to the initial windings and close the heavy-duty contacts for the dryer heater.

Sometimes when a tumble dryer's motor is covered in dust, the weights hang out. The powder prevents the weights from putting pressure on the plunger of the centrifugal switch, closing the contacts to the starting winding. A tumble dryer motor cannot start with just the windings, so it will buzz. Hold down the start button long enough and it will burn the windings.

Another big problem with dust that causes the centrifugal switch to hang is that the dryer heater contacts are closed. If the timer is moved from the off position to normal drying, the heater will energize with the dryer without turning and the motor will not run. This is a fire hazard.

So how do you fix a hanging centrifugal switch in a tumble dryer?
It is actually very easy to clean a centrifugal switch in a tumble dryer. Disconnect the dryer from the electrical supply and gain access to the dryer motor. You may be lucky and have a blind access panel at the back of the dryer just behind the removable motor. The access panel is generally held in place by two screws. The good news is that it is not necessary to remove the motor from the dryer to clean the centrifugal switch. Take a vacuum cleaner that blows and completely removes dust from the motor. Return to the regular vacuum cleaner and wipe off all lint in the dryer base area. Use your fingers to slide the weights back and forth on the dryer shaft, making sure not to hit the springs. DO NOT lubricate this area as this will only attract more dust.
